Fayette Electric Cooperative joined local students at the Fayette County Fairgrounds on October 6 for Progressive Ag Safety Day, providing a hands-on electrical safety demonstration designed to help young people recognize hazards and make safe decisions around electricity. During the event, the cooperative's safety coordinator, linemen, and apprentice linemen used FEC's high-voltage safety trailer to show fifth-grade students the real dangers associated with power lines and electrical equipment.
Progressive Ag Safety Day brings together community organizations and industry professionals to teach students important safety lessons they can apply at home, at school, and throughout their lives. Fayette Electric Cooperative's presentation focused on electrical safety awareness, an important topic for rural communities where children may encounter overhead power lines, utility equipment, farm machinery, and other electrical infrastructure.
Using realistic demonstrations on the safety trailer, FEC personnel illustrated how electricity travels and why maintaining a safe distance from energized equipment is critical. Students learned about the dangers of touching power lines, climbing trees near electric lines, flying kites too close to utility facilities, and entering areas marked with warning signs. The demonstration also emphasized the importance of reporting downed power lines and treating every power line as energized and dangerous.
"Educating young people about electrical safety is one of the most important investments we can make in our communities," said Safety Coordinator Larry Sulak. "When students understand the risks associated with electricity and learn safe behaviors early, those lessons can stay with them for a lifetime."
The high-voltage safety trailer serves as an effective teaching tool because it allows students to see electrical concepts demonstrated in a controlled environment. By visually showing the effects of electricity, students gain a better understanding of why safety rules exist and how following them can prevent serious injuries and fatalities.
As a local electric cooperative, Fayette Electric Cooperative is committed to more than delivering reliable power. The cooperative also works year-round to promote safety education through school programs, community events, and outreach efforts designed to protect members and the communities it serves.
Fayette Electric Cooperative appreciates the opportunity to participate in Progressive Ag Safety Day and partner with other organizations dedicated to empowering young people with practical safety knowledge. Through educational programs like these, the cooperative hopes to help build a safer future for the next generation.
