Welcome, Neighbor!

Powering Communities, Empowering Members

Electric cooperatives revolutionized rural life by bringing electricity to farms and ranches that had previously been left in the dark. Today, we continue this legacy—not just by providing reliable electricity but by empowering our members and communities to thrive.

As the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) explains, “The purpose of electric cooperatives is to power communities and empower members to improve the quality of their lives.”

The cooperative movement began in 1844 when a group of English weavers, frustrated with high company store prices, pooled their money to purchase their own groceries—launching the first cooperative. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt jump-started the rural cooperative movement in the U.S. with the creation of the Rural Electrification Administration, making affordable electricity a reality for rural communities.

Today, Fayette Electric Cooperative proudly carries on this tradition of innovation, empowerment, and community support.

How We Measure Success

Fayette Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit distribution cooperative. This type of co-op buys electricity from wholesale providers, arranges for its transmission and distributes the power to members through the co-op's power lines.

At Fayette EC, the money members pay for electricity goes toward covering co-op expenses, setting aside funds for emergencies and future needs, and returning any leftover funds to our members—the cooperative’s true shareholders. As a non-profit, our focus is on long-term stability and delivering value to our members, not generating profits.

Unlike private businesses, where success is measured by sales and profit, Fayette Electric measures success by member satisfaction. It’s the heart of everything we do—ensuring our members receive reliable service, fair rates, and a commitment to their well-being and community.
