Fayette Electric Cooperative is proud to celebrate 89 years of service to the communities it serves, marking a legacy that began on November 3, 1937, when residents united with a shared vision to bring electricity to rural families across the region.
At a time when many farms and ranches throughout Fayette County had no access to electric power, daily life depended on kerosene lanterns, manual labor, and daylight hours. Larger utility companies often viewed rural electrification as economically impractical, leaving many communities without access to the conveniences and opportunities electricity could provide.
That changed when local leaders, including businessman George Adamcik and Fayette County Agent J.C. Yeary, helped organize a grassroots movement to improve life for rural residents. Working alongside local farmers, ranchers, and community leaders, they formed what would become Fayette Electric Cooperative.
Building the Cooperative required determination, sacrifice, and faith in a brighter future. During the Great Depression, prospective members invested $5 to join the cooperative, a significant commitment for many families. Neighbors gathered in homes, shared ideas, and worked together toward a common goal. Their efforts culminated in the signing of Fayette Electric Cooperative's Articles of Incorporation on November 3, 1937.
By late October 1938, approximately 150 homes had been wired for service, and the cooperative's first 50 miles of electric line had been energized. For many rural families, electric lights, refrigeration, and modern appliances dramatically changed daily life and opened new opportunities for future generations.
Today, Fayette Electric Cooperative provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to members across portions of seven counties. While technology and infrastructure have evolved significantly over the past eight decades, the cooperative remains guided by the same principles established by its founders: local control, accountability, service, and commitment to community.
"Fayette Electric Cooperative was built by people who believed their communities deserved the same opportunities and quality of life as anyone else," said Tracy Denton, director of marketing, communications & training. "As we celebrate 89 years of service, we honor the vision and determination of those early members while continuing to invest in the future of the communities we serve."
The anniversary celebration also marks the beginning of a yearlong effort leading up to Fayette Electric Cooperative's 90th anniversary in 2027. Throughout the coming year, the Cooperative will collect historical photographs, stories, and memories that highlight the people, milestones, and moments that helped shape the organization.
Co-op members are invited to participate by sharing photographs, family stories, memories of receiving electricity for the first time, recollections of longtime employees or directors, and photos from annual meetings and community events.
"Every member has played a role in our story," Denton said. "As we prepare to celebrate 90 Years of Powering Community in 2027, we want to preserve those memories and share them with future generations."
