This October, cooperatives across the nation will celebrate National Co-op Month, highlighting the unique benefits of the cooperative model and the communities they serve. Locally, Fayette Electric Cooperative and Colorado Valley Communications are once again putting cooperative principles into action by partnering to host their annual Community Shred Day.
Now in its eighth year, the event will be held on Friday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the KC Community Center, 190 South Brown Street, La Grange.
The event provides members with free, secure disposal of sensitive documents. Each member may bring up to two boxes of documents to be shredded at no cost. Additional boxes may be shredded with a $10 per box donation, with all proceeds benefitting the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter. CenTex Industries will provide professional, on-site shredding services.
Organizers remind participants that boxes must not exceed 26.7” long x 15.7” wide (equivalent to a 21-gallon tote). Only paper documents will be accepted — items such as cardboard, binders, notebooks with metal spirals, hardbound books, hard drives, and electronics will not be shredded. Members must remain with their items, and no containers may be left behind.
The annual event reflects the core cooperative values of “Cooperation Among Cooperatives” and “Concern for Community.” Fayette EC and Colorado Valley Communications say Shred Day is more than a service—it’s a way to thank members while protecting them from identity theft and supporting a local cause.
