Fayette Electric Cooperative is urging caution this week after two of its members were recently targeted in a phone scam. Members received an automated message that their accounts were delinquent and that they should press “2” to speak to a representative. Once a “representative” came on the line, they requested the members' credit card information. The fraudulent caller claimed to be from Fayette Electric Cooperative.
The scammer told the members that they owed money and that their power would be disconnected within the next five minutes if immediate payment was not made over the phone.
Fayette Electric reminds its members that a secondary notice is mailed to inform members of their delinquent accounts. The Cooperative will not call and demand immediate payment by phone and will not ask for your banking information.
If you should receive a suspicious call stating you will be disconnected or demanding immediate payment, hang up and call Fayette Electric Cooperative at 979-968-3181 to verify the balance on your account and report the details of the call.
